Client:  Department of Infrastructure Planning and Logistics

Contract Value:   $678, 232.34

Colemans were awarded the Chinner Rd Intersection upgrade in March 2020, this was a Federally funded black spot Project of which had encountered many accidents over the years.  Poor Visibility was attributed to be one of the contributing factors on this intersection as the Stuart Highway met the Chinner Rd on a bend, combined with inadequate turning lanes, on a major truck Route.  Colemans tackled all of these adversities with a can do attitude and implemented a Traffic Control Plan to manage the traffic.

A Major challenge for the project was a change in traffic control legislation throughout the Northern Territory which saw the Traffic Management Plan originally approved for the project become obsolete.  This did take some time to get right with the Department of Infrastructure and Colemans Traffic Control Sub contractor working in earnest to ensure  the outcome was the best for all road users with Nil accidents and incidents on the project, it was time well taken to get the Traffic Management Plan correct.

In addition, COVID19 lock downs occurred for a week to start with and then intermittent days throughout the project.  This caused uncertainty with our employees  in many ways, mental health issues were a major cause for discussion as our teams had to travel to site in enclosed spaces together and at time come in close contact.

Training that had been planned for the job was still carried out to a desirable level, which saw one Indigenous apprentice employed by Colemans on the site for the duration of the project.  While engagement was maintained, the apprentice was able to complete most of his chosen machinery Units on this work site alone.  Upgrades for traffic control qualifications for this project also occurred to stay in line with newly implemented requirements.

Quality materials were used at all times to build the extensions on the additional turning lanes, we did encounter some non tendered sections had also failed Which were negotiated while on site for a better outcome for the project. Although this Project was affected by external matters which no one could have foreseen, our management team worked with DIPL and our employees & Subcontractors to maintain standards, quality and safety at all times for a project of very high quality.
